Class chalet: ended
Yet another class chalet has ended. Although this class chalet was probably not the most activity-filled one or the most well-planned one, I feel that it has extra meaning, as we are still able to come together and have fun after being scattered all over the world (literally). Even though we all have our own lives, own commitments now, we are still making the effort to meet each other and keep in contact.
It is especially heartwarming that we are still able to chat comfortably, crack lame jokes, play games and share our thoughts openly, like we still see each other in sch every day. How to forget that night, when we sat down and shared things - things that were to be told only to trusted friends?
4 years, 4 class chalets. May this tradition continue. A really sincere thank you to those that made the class chalet possible, and to those who made the effort to come down and made the "class" in "class chalet" (more) complete. =)

Many more nice pics, was really hard to choose. Its the first time I've seen and mixed with so many people of different nationalities, the world now seems small and big at the same time! The Austrians rock! =D (Don't you think they're very cute =P)

for the medics
okay, first of all, sorry cos this post is not one of those europe-posts or world cup-posts =)
on one of my forays into the blogosphere, i read one of the posts in drliew.net (yes, that doctor happens to have the same surname as i do) which piqued my curiosity..
according to the post (the post is hidden from public view cos it's restricted to registered viewers.. weird doctor haha), from one look, that doc was able to tell the ah soh that she had loss of sensation in her first three fingers and half of her ring finger (paralysis of median nerve right?) just from looking at her hands. when the ah soh expressed surprise at the doc's pro-ness, the doc said, quoting him, "sup sup sui! first year anatomy."
my question is, how to tell? haha.

world cup emotions
hello all.. took a day's rest to recover from yesterday's immense shock, and after watching tonight's game france vs. portugal, i decided to post. the world cup is almost over, regretably. all that remains is the 3rd-4th placing match btwn germany & portugal, and the finals btwn france & italy. i haven't experienced a world cup first hand before, and i must say it is an exhilarating experience. especially when you're rooting for a country you would call your 2nd home. when germany wins, everyone's mood improves, you feel like you're floating around for the whole of the day & the next. when germany lost yesterday, the country went silent. not so much anger, but rather from disbelief. it was a game of the highest quality despite the lack of goals till the 118th minute (sigh), extremely fairly played (especially by germany, and i'm not the only one to say this) and very entertaining. so there was really nothing to complain about. the country mood's slightly deflated, but everyone's still real proud of the team, and no one has forgotten their roles as hosts. :)
after watching tonight's game i think something must be done (and urgently too) about the dishonorable play by some players. for example cristiano ronaldo who dives with a 10-min frequency. for example certain italian players who were rolling around the pitch with minimal or no contact. this really spoils the play, and referees cannot always be right on the spot to make the right judgement. the pre-match hype around the germany-italy match wasn't about the silky skills, ingenious tactics, or solid defenses, but about the suspension of germany's top player torsten frings. about the part the italian media played, in particular. kinda unfortunate, that such stuff have to happen. :( spoils the fun abit.
yeah okay, felt gd to ramble abit abt football :P my 精神粮食 for the past mth, heh. everyone, take care, and see u all in.. 12 days!! :)

on mizwang's request.. rome :)
okay, the last part of my postings.. rome! personally my favourite city (apart fr berlin!) of the trip, mainly cos it has so much to do and is so spacious in comparison with florence. still as orange as most italian cities seem to be, but really busy in a pleasant way. this shows yijin, me & yibun in front of the pantheon, a still-in-use church that was an architectural accomplishment in its times. measures the same in diameter and height, and contains remains of 2 italian emporers & raphael the artist. :)

here's another picture of a massive building - a monument of victor emmanuel II, one of italy's emporers. it's also known as the wedding cake. :) cute eh. and in front of it u see 4 silly pple in silly poses :)

next we go on to the trevi fountain, a very pretty fountain with clear blue waters, looking especially enchanting at night. unfortunately, the photo does no justice to it, but at least u see the pple pretty clearly. it's said that if u throw coins over ur head into the fountain, the 1st will ensure u return to rome, and the 2nd will get u an italian girl/boyfriend. or grant you a wish, depending on which guidebook you believe :P hehe.

another famous landmark of rome is the colosseum - this huge circular building used then as a venue for gladiator fights, which also served as public entertainment. the above-ground areas are seats, while the underground parts are where wild beasts & gladiators (once prisoners, then sort of celebrities) are kept when not fighting.

the other big thing "in" rome is the vatican city - the smallest independent state in the world. after queuing for more than 2h, we finally got into the museums, housing an egyptian collection, many statues, the raphael rooms and other beautifully painted rooms (places where popes stayed) and the sistine chapel. here's a pic of xiang ge & yibun doing a cock-imitation of the statue behind. :P

the last room of the series was the sistine chapel. a little underwhelming at the beginning, but with the help of the audio guide it was not difficult to see the beauty of it. the most amazing of them all probably, here's the ceiling.

finally, we moved on to the st peter's basilica & st peter's square. the basilica is the biggest in the world, very very impressive majestic building. :) here're the guys outside.

and lastly, to end of this issue (which is getting shorter and crappier, cos yah, tired lah.. :P) this is one of the irresistably cute swiss guards. xiang ge claims he looked him in the face when he took the photo. i guess he found xiang ge cuter la, sigh.. :P

okay, this marks the end of my photo journal.. whoever else wants to post please do! :D am very excited abt seeing all ur pics too, when we finally get the burning done! :) wait for me k, will bring my photos back soon! :)

deutschland!!
to give another side of the story to what ningqi wrote.. here's how the germans have viewed the world cup. basically before the world cup, germany played a few international friendlies, out of which one was particularly disastrous - a 4-1 defeat against italy. the team was pretty shit, the manager was pretty shit (cos he stayed in california, and introduced stupid american training methods, and americans can't even play football supposedly), everything was pretty shit. so the initial german mentality was that of - let's just be good hosts and hope we get into the next round. in fact, the official motto of the world cup is "die Welt zu Gast bei Freunden" which means "a time to make friends" officially, or more literally, the world as guests with friends. :)
there were some firsts in this world cup, most notably the Fan Fests - big screens were set up in the 12 host cities to accomodate fans who couldn't get tickets. not only was every game screened live, singers bands & cultural groups also performed to enthusiastic crowds :) it's really great cos one day you hear say, latin american music, and pple would be dancing to it.. another day it could be a korean cultural programme & as many pple would be watching. so when matches are on, pple usually go there 2h before it starts to be able to even get in. apart fr the Fan Fests hundreds of volunteers are also stationed all over the host cities to help fans. :) get accomodation, find gd food, amuse themselves in btwn games, get transport tips etc. shops open on sunday (a big WOW for germany) and the city is constantly buzzing with excitement. :) :)
so now to the story everyone is familiar with. the german recovery! :) yep as football fans might know, german football was synonymous with boring, solid defence, wait for the one chance to score, and little else. to everyone's surprise, they started playing the most exciting fast-paced football while everyone else started to play like germany of the past :P wahaha. so public confidence began restoring, pple started to believe the team could at least make the semis (which they did!!).. and flags have been waving, pple have been wearing german colours, singing the world cup songs & their national anthem with gusto, and even painting their houses in black-red-gold apparently! and this show of patriotism is in fact pretty special & a first in itself. since WW2, germans have only dared to say they were ashamed for being german, any show of patriotism would be met with a raised eyebrow. who could be proud of the part in the war & widespread murder they committed, right? but i think thru the world cup they realise they also deserve to be proud of their country, for admitting to their mistakes, for recovering so quickly after the war, and for the responsible role they now play in world politics. in fact, football played a role in the recovery of germany, as some pple say. their first world cup victory was in 1954, aka "the miracle of Bern", and it apparently gave the german people much belief in themselves, which helped the economy alot too.
yes, stuff ningqi mentioned are fairly common here too, especially the non-stop honking, and sitting on the car, in the open boot, waving their flags, and shouting "Deutschland!!!" :) also the beer drinking (i havent had beer poured over me yet fortunately) and of course the partying goes on.
and if i may say so, i think germany has done pretty well organising the whole thing! have only read reports and heard about how fans have encountered many friendly germans, enjoyed their food & beer, discovered that germans were indeed diligent, efficient (thanks to the trains woohoo!) and have fantastic organisational abilities, and they even know how to party, wow! :P i guess the world cup is also a big promotional event for germany but i think it's been done in good taste & is pretty successful! :) :)
so.. maybe germany will meet france in the finals! :) just a reminder - germany vs italy is on 5th 3am sgp time, and portugal vs france on 6th 3am. 3rd 4th placing is 9th 3am, and the final is on the 10th 2am. dont miss it! :)

Allez les bleus!
The atmosphere here is unbelievable! although france is not the host country, soccer is THE craze now. I went to the centre of the town last night to watch the match between brazil and france on a large screen, and WOW what an experience! The crowd went nuts when henry scored, and it was like a large scale disco at the end of the match. It was raining beer, and as i walked home, many cars took to the streets, honking like there's no tomorrow. People were playing ball on the streets, and flags were waved everywhere. youths were sitting on top of the cars whistling and shouting and congratulating each other. It was a miracle i got on the the bus, and that the bus managed to snake its way through the tangle of crazed french.
The french really love zidane... before the match, when he first appeared on screen there was immediate cheering. during the match itself when he did those couple of stunts and got past a defender, the crowd would go: 'ZIZOU! ZIZOU!' (their pet name for him). and i thought he really did play very well!
I dont know how the atm in germany is, but for the french its a bit special, cos of what happened in 2002, everybody expected a strong team from the start. but after the first two matches of draw against swiss and south korea, the people were aghast. all around people were utterly disappointed, expecting the worst against togo. Then all of a sudden the team started winning, and its AMAZING to see the complete transformation it brought abt to the daily life of the common french. I can feel the change in the atm here, from the press, classroom discussion... everywhere. there were free magazines given out about the team, and the newspapers are abound with the team members' comments on how a new unity was born in the team itself. if you watched the match, you'll realise ribery who scored the first goal against spain and henry in the goal against brazil ran towards the reserves to celebrate it with them. good unity huh... And this feeling is really infective... im supporting the team like its my own country!

always think again?
recently my uncle got hospitalised for vomiting blood and was bleeding from the stomach.
the first response my mom had was that he should eat ink (mo4 shui3) n burnt hair to stop the bleeding! being skeptical of my mom's knowledge of tcm (as usual and for good reason too) i didnt want to believe her. in fact, the "treatment" sounded more like an old maid's tale than anything else.
but today when visiting my uncle with my dad, my dad actually told me that the "treatment" my mom mentioned is actually what he would recommend too.
i was shocked. i could believe how anyway ink or bUrNt HaIr can help stop bleeding in the stomach.
this is the explanation my father gave me, integrated with some of my intepretations
my uncle was bleeding in the stomach due to diabetes (angiopathy etc. rare but possible) aggravated by ketoacidosis (because he went overseas and without the supervision of my cousins refused to take any medicine)
by not giving him food, the acid secreted during the cephalic phase of the gastric secretion and the basal secretion is not diluted and it further damages the wounds in the stomach lining.
this is why even with a lot of saline transfusion, my uncle is still bleeding and his BP is still low and HR is still high (indicating low blood volume)
ink and burnt hair (apparently) can help to gel the wounds together. some powder or some other thing should also be ingested to help dilute the acid.
after my dad's explanation, along with my supreme trust and admiration for my dad, it kinda sounded logical even though i was still extremely skeptical.
he went on to offer some explanation why scientists jus cant find chinese medication useful..if you extract individual chemicals from the herbs and test them indivdually on cells, bacteria and viruses, most likely you wont find anything useful.
this is because tcm works from a diff basis from western drugs. tcm emphasises on development n strengthening of the entire body's constitution and immune system.
we went on to talk about epidemics and other stuff
i do not know if my dad is right. maybe he is wrong. maybe tcm is a load of bullshit and it is really jus shit and nothing else.
but the moral of this very long post is:
to my dear scientists, civil servants and fellow docs that bother to read this very long post:
dun dismiss something the moment you hear it.
dun dismiss something that you cannot understand or cannot explain.
dun dismiss something as impossible until you have tried it, experienced it and tried to understand it.
always think again.
especially when there is almost 3000 years worth of experience behind it.

world cup 2006 - germany :)
hello hello! i thought i'd interrupt my europe trip photo-posting by posting something abt the world cup!!! :D haha it's hard not to get excited when everyone else is, isn't it, even if you all are miles and miles away.. and here in germany, you can't escape the world cup even if you want to! :P lots of german flags flying on cars, houses, everywhere, and on matchdays when germany plays, pple dress up in german colours. here's an example :)

paint works as well as anything as clothing, doesnt it :P even saw some women completely naked and painted on tv. pity no pics huh :P
and some pple choose to dress up like that! looking most conspicuous even when everyone else is only in black, red & gold :)

and now, some pictures of the fan fests. basically fan fests are places set up with huge screens, concerts and stalls selling very german stuff (wurst & beer!) :) for pple who dont have tickets and would still like to get a piece of the action and the atmosphere. it's different everywhere, and here's one of cologne :) here we're kiasu, we have 5 huge screens :P hehe. it was so hot that day (germany vs sweden) that the fire brigade was spraying water on us! :)

here's another one of cologne, with me & a thai friend :) i'm wearing german colours woohoo!! :D it was qt crazy today really, after germany scored the equalizer, everyone went crazy & hugged everyone ard :) and there were cheers the whole time, reminded me a little of hwachong :P

lastly, one of frankfurt, where i was on tues to watch brazil-ghana & france-spain. this was real nice, cos the screens were on the river and pple were sitting/standing on either side, on the banks. there were also seats so we could comfortably watch the match (and actually see the screen!) and anyway, this pic was taken prob at 9pm german time, u can see the spanish & french team shaking hands :) lovely long days rock :)

lastly, click to enlarge, and hope u enjoyed this little report from germany!! :)
