03S78. HCJC.

27 of us make up the lovely class of 03S78 :)

it was a year and 6 mths ago that we graduated from hwachong, nothing much has
changed since then - we still have the good old class outings when we spend most
of the time walking around (+ extended one in europe recently), we still play
mahjong, watch movies, go 我的妈! together (at nwxiang's request of course)..

to many more years of friendship!

first driving lesson..

haha i just had my first driving lesson (well it was a "undang-undang" - aka rules and regulations - lesson) today..but i think i'm pretty slow liao as compared to some other ppl like xx who's learning how to drive a car.. but isn't it more likely to drive a car in malaysia than in singapore? =p

oh i just learned today that malaysians can use their driving licences to drive singapore-registered cars (and vice versa).. the lecturer was like emphasising even if a thailand friend (supposing i have one) wanted to test drive my brand-new kancil, he'd be fined if caught.. cos his licence cannot be used to drive malaysian-registered cars.. haha so next time when u guys buy ur bmws and ferraris and mercedeses, pls do let me test drive them =) i'll let u drive a kancil to return the favour =PpP

individualism?

haha weixin.. it's not bcos of individualism.. it's more like due to bouliao-ness.. i bet yifan will agree.. pua to a certain extent too =) some ppl need to write someth to arrest the decline in our language "skills".. else 3 mths down the road all our england become very the powderful.. then when we go into uni dunno england how can survive?

do i make sense? maybe the rot is setting in liao =)

Individualism

Individualism is on the rise as i notice personal blogs have sprouted from members of our class. Somehow its weird, all of them share a distinct trait. Anyway, i also haven't posted in ages, just didn't have the mood or feeling to write anything.

But since now that i have taken a break from national service, i'll at least be able to look at blogs and share some musings? Will be taking a walk from Jln Kayu to Lower Seletar tmr, anyone interested or free just give me a call or sms... maybe its too late eh, but then as always, i would probably go alone. haha

heys :) i think i havent posted for a long time. so much so that yang has noticed and reminded me to post! well well. feel quite good today. it's one of those less stony days i've had since finishing my work in hwachong. lets see, went for council outing, had great attendance, few activities, but i'd say it was pleasant and v comforting to see familiar faces :) hmm no pics to post but maybe u guys wont be interested anyway?

i've been feelin sadder and sadder as the days go by, as im reminded of how i'm gonna leave my friends, family and everything behind 3 mths fr now. going into the unknown. seriously, its as little known as it can get huh.. few singaporeans there, not to mention seniors, or even hwachongians. think in any uni i choose, i'd be one of the less-than-5 s'porean students there. quite scary at times, but i shall believe that i'll either a) find some friends i can relate to real soon, b) keep in contact so well that i dont realise im away (hmm?) , or c) be so busy and happy that i dont run into problems. well well. better to be optimistic yeah. :)

lets see. havent really talked abt mongolia yeah? it was qt eye-opening, had quite some thoughts seeing how mongolia has developed. basically some facts abt mongolia - area's 1.56million km² (comparing w s'pore - its 2200 times that of us) while the population's 2.8million. its landlocked, between china & russia. has only 3 real cities, and the only international airport there has 2 berths for planes.

was in ulaan baatar (capital city) for 2+ days and erdenet (where we built, the 3rd biggest city) for 7-8 days. not very developed, sort of stuck halfway between being developed & not. most stayed in houses, some apartment blocks abt 7 storeys high at most. grasslands were everywhere, hills as well. u dont haf to move far away fr the city centre to be in the grasslands. yups. i just felt that it was in a terrible phase (or has it been there and stagnating?) - its sort-of developed but everything wasnt working well, inefficient, half-done.

had some exciting (?) incidents along the way. for one, my fone got lost (pple! if u msg me PLS leave ur name behind or i'll waste a msg going - who's this?) , other fones, an ipod, a passport, a whole backpack went missing or got stolen as well. had to do problem-solving along to way :) our van also very unfortunately knocked down a lady in erdenet. shes okay now thankfully but it just made me appreciate singapore so much. basically in mongolia e roads are just free for all, no markings at all, anyone can drive anywhere (with a general direction on each side but well u dont really hafta care or follow), at any speed. the drivers swerve ard alot, drive fast, and almost always hit another vehicle. at times we marvelled at their skill but at other times, we really feared for ours and other road-users' safety. :/ its like when i came baq to singapore, got onto the roads i felt so super safe! tts just one aspect yeah.

oh mutton is the foodstuff in mongolia. every (or almost every) meal had mutton. vegetables are rare, and leafy veg are impossible to find. oil seems to be in abundance, as is salt. well, u get the picture. some of us werent used to the food. i just took less of it and came out alright, but some of e kids got pretty sick. :/

what else? hmmm.. i realise its a give and take between natural beauty, innocence, pure & simple joy, and development, materialism. felt that mongolia, in the process of development, had built factories, learnt to do meaner business, become less simple, driven roads into the grasslands, and lost that bit of special-ness abt it. the openness of the place was lovely, but when i saw all the tracks of vehicles in the grasslands or hills, allowing tourists to visit or wadeva.. i just feel qt sad :/ yeahh. maybe one day i'll see somewhere i feel can really haf e best of both worlds. balancing both nicely.

shd mention abit abt work. we basically did things like carpenting (hammering nails into wood), plastering, mudding, sawing, digging, shovelling, transporting (carrying stones/bricks/what not from place to place). not too hard the work, but need to learn some skills. gd experience i guess but not the main point of this trip. manual labour is not where we can contribute most, but rather money & experience gained which wud allow us to be exposed to what habitat and other NGOs do, what countries like mongolia need, and what pple like us can do to help. yupps. :)

ohhs and yang has an announcement - next week we might be watching batman instead of tou wen zi d. do take note!! :)

ciao~! finally finished the long post! :D

random rants

Perhaps this reflects my rather disjointed flow of thoughts and fleeting spans of concentration now. Bloggin for the sake of bloggin. I have the inclination to dig any pile of objects now given that I spent a whole 30sec in the wee hours of yesterday morning trying to crank out a piece of clay from the ground before I realised it was really just my boot. Another amazing self-deprecatory experience, not to mention wailing "stuck in a moment you cant get out of" to my chungkol when the rain and falling tree collapsed my half-done fire trench. Cant beat my buddy's safety team dance or mine prodding dance though :)

The slow sentimental songs arent sinking in, instead the horrendous techno beats (mercilessly drilled in by my adjacent room over previous nights) are ringing over them in my head. Techno lyrics are terrible, or at least the few I've listened to... why am I bobbin my head to a song made up of nothing but 6 words? I'm definitely in some zonked-out blank mood now :S

To be an adult is to be alone -- Jean Rostand, Thoughts of a biologist (1939)

Well, it does seem quite hard to catch up with other people nowadays. Worse, I have to reacquaint myself with my old surroundings. I dont know what to do when I return to my room. Rather, I have a great inertia to start doing anything cos i won't finish it in time. I'm not enjoying my bookouts as much as I look forward to when I'm in camp :S The problem of inflating your expectations. Nah, I think I just dont have enough bkout time :(

Oh, and this guy has more to say:

Kill one man, and you are a murderer. Kill millions of men, and you are a conqueror. Kill them all, and you are a god. -- Jean Rostand, Thoughts of a biologist (1939)

I feel like reading this bk.

Today's pool was nice! And I saw this on a flyer on my way back: Cherish things while we still have them. Serendipitous reminders :)

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could

Have a nice week ahead! :D

Farewell dinner

Hey guys,
just a reminder that the farewell dinner is tomorrow 4th june (saturday) 6.30pm orchard mrt. Reservations at fei cui la mian xiao long bao. Yup.

Dun worry yijin. Blog more when you're overseas :) and congrats to pua! I suppose your talents will finally be put to better use :D

Insignificant be it may,
watch the words you do not say.
I could have changed his life that day,
But I chose to look the other way.

Response

In response to yijin's call for more blogging activity, I wrote this entry.
I can no longer restrain my overjoyed self. I shall indulge myself further.
I have gotten out of army. Yes! That repressive stinky repugnant desultatory institution! Aha! The northeast island with stagnant stale air, needing further investments in air circulation, too! Lady Luck is smiling on me...
I have escaped from being posted to ASLC, Armour, Artillery, Combat Engineers and such "xiong" army vocations! Mwahaha..
RSAF Tactical Air Support Command (TASC) / Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Training School (UTS) has embraced me. Relief first to grow into disbelief to mutate to joy and immense joy... Meanwhile Slackiness envelopes me :)
Please do not queue to stone me! It's not worth the effort. My joy remains while I remain blind to the downsides..

(note to future students in unis: appreciate ur lecturers, however "sucky" they may be! =)

realise i can only talk abt work.. sigh..

oh ya outings galore: this fri morn got skating, sat night got class outing.. yay looking forward to it.. nan2 de2 can meet after graduation, cos it'll be more nan2 de2 after we all go to our respective unis.. yar lor so those who r still deciding whether to go for it - GO LEH!
