chem lects.. again
this time round, as it was my lecturer's last lect with us, he bade farewell to us in a very interesting fashion - he held a demonstration at the end of the lecture, but boy was that interesting..
he first mentioned about semtex to us - basically it's a mixture of explosives lah, nasty stuff indeed.. but he produced cotton balls dipped presumably in semtex, and started to explode them by bringing a hot rod close to the cotton balls.. what happened was that the cotton balls disappeared - poof! - in a ball of flames.. the lecturer casually mentioned that the explosion was "neat" because "it didn't leave any residue behind".. hmmm
he then tried exploding it on HIS HAND.. chao gung ho la.. thank goodness his hand wasn't blown to bits cos the reaction was too fast to immolate the palm holding that piece of cotton ball..
he then produced a sheep - made from cotton, mind you - and then said that it was the "pride of the lab technician".. he then used a loooooooong pole with a metal rod stuck to its end, and started to heat the rod with the bunsen flame burning merrily nearby..
and then, he brought it near to the sheep..
and the entire thing exploded like a fireball! i was sitting 9 rows away from the demonstration, and i could feel a wave of heat washing over my face when the sheep exploded! it was soooo cool!! what was left of the sheep was only the metal frame holding it in shape =) i shld have brought a camera to the demonstration, dammit..
see why i'm inspired to continue taking chem next year? =D

Mednuggets
Hello all! How are u all doing? Been too busy (really?) to blog lately but yes, you cant procrastinate forever. =p CAs will be over soon!
<-- [Thats a plasticine model of whats in your abdomen btw, quite chio huh.] Recently, most of the med students had the physician development programme (PDP) aka go to the wards and hone your skills at developing a doctor(pseudo)-patient relationship. I was attached to this cardiothoracic prof who was a little condescending to us feeble m1 students. In this case, the doctor-intern/med student-patient relationship was pretty similar to the warrant officer-sergeant-trainee. Ehhh, okay lah... not so exaggerated. Was lucky and got a really nice and chatty old gentleman who was an ex-police training officer who convinced me that: 1) I actually dun really know what's wrong with him 2) I need to go and pick up malay soon
After that went to the clinic and saw a few patients being examined by the doc. Wah, almost every single case had varicose veins. There were 2 m5 students there as well doing their med student-patient routine, examining the patient and subsequently presenting their case to the doctor. Hard to imagine we'll be doing that in a few years man. All the jargon :S "Maybe an APBI using doppler... then vein sclerotherapy... give some warf/hep and use 4-layer bandaging for the ulcer and maybe stocking later"
Eh.... the best I can manage is "drink more water, dun sit but can shake leg, dun anyhow press, itchy dun scratch, painful dun touch.... then if cannot, I'll find u a competent vascular or plastic surgeon"
So basically, that's about it this week. Nothing else really interesting of note. Harry potter is out in Singapore though! dunno if I shd go and watch. Looking forward to after CAs :) :) :) all the preparations for BT (biom training) and ET (e..... trip) will kick in.
So take care u all... Blog!

resolution
after deliberating for hours with representatives from vasantham central, we have managed to find out that the programme was actually screened at 1930 instead of 2000. (@#@#$#%$%%!!!)
however, thankfully, representatives from vasantham central were kind enough to offer us a video cassette containing the footage of that programme. our dearest, 'most-skilled' video editor-cum-writer-cum-camera man-cum-genius mr ronnie tan voon shiong is transcribing the cassette tape into digital format as we speak!
hence, fans of tan ying cong ryan shea fret not! you shall reunite with ur dearest shea soon...:)
once again, representing the tycrs PR committee, i apologise for the inconvience caused. thank you for your understanding.
(*i am damm happy that manutd won and i actually saw them win!)

The Unforgiven
Who is the uncompromiser after? The unforgiven of course!
I almost forgot how much time we used to spend elaborately planning birthday schemes. What was the 超級無敵杀死你之刑 anyway???
Hahaz, yes all the best for those with exams, assignments, timings, tasks & missions~ Don't end up like the unforgiven. tsk tsk....

public apology
it is with great regret that I have to apologise to the general public about the absence of ryan in vasantham central on 4th nov 2005, 8pm. To the fans who have specially made time to witness this historical spectacle, my heart is with you. I have greatly missed ryan too. *sob* *sob* Indeed, after all the hype surrounding event, it is a tremendous pity that we are unable to see Mr Tan Ying Cong Ryan Shea speaking tamil on national television
Rest assured that no stone will be left unturned in the investigation on the no-show by vasantham central.
If there are any problems, please contact my lawyer Mr Goh Wenyang at 91234556.

chem lects..
..are so fun =)
our chem lecturer did a demonstration in front of the LT today.. we were learning about molecular orbitals (MOs).. so according to the theory, nitrogen is diamagnetic (not influenced by magnetic fields) but oxygen is paramagnetic (attracted to magnets) cos oxygen has two unpaired electrons in the 2p* MO (dun worry if u dunno wad it is.. neither do i =P)..
so he whipped out two innocent-looking thermos flasks.. the first one contained liquid nitrogen (!), and then he proceeded to pour that into a test tube suspended in air like a pendulum.. one thing weird was that he wore a labcoat and safety goggles, but he din wear any gloves.. he was basically pouring liquid nitrogen with his bare hands! anyway he then brought an "insanely powerful magnet", to quote him, and then brought it close to the test tube.. then he said, "look at the test tube closely.. u're not supposed to see anything.." everyone was lamed out at that time cos we didn't noe nitrogen was diamagnetic, so basically everyone was craning their necks to look at.. nothing -.-" the cool thing was that he "cleaned" the test tube simply by pouring the contents out.. and for good measure he splashed some of the liquid nitrogen from the thermos flask on the floor.. everything evaporated within seconds, but the sight of it was pretty cool!
then, he proceeded to fill the test tube with liquid oxygen, and he brought the magnet close to it.. and lo and behold, the test tube was actually attracted, and it stuck to the magnet! it was sooo cool!!
to cap the demonstration off, he poured liquid oxygen into a metal pan containing rice crispies, and set it alight.. the entire thing burned merrily for a few seconds.. and he admitted the demonstration was a good way for him to play with liquid oxygen.. erps.
everyone gave him a big hand after the demo cos it was sooo nice! sigh i should have done similar stuff when i was teaching.. i think any student would love a good sight of things being set alight, wouldn't they?

Istana visit

A few of us visited the Istana which was opened to the public during the Deepavali holiday yesterday. For the majority of us, it was our "maiden" trip there. The Istana, being built by the British Colonial Government in 1869, can be aptly described as a sprawling parkland lush with greenery.
Although we did not have a chance to meet President S R Nathan, we did, however, met someone special and dear to us...
And he is...

Perryn! Not an easy job, considering the need to stand upright, firm and impervious to external influences, especially in our presence. Jiayou~ Yup, this is just a short update. Hope all of you are getting on fine... and living a life whilst following your heart and mind. :)
