27 of us make up the lovely class of 03S78 :)

it was a year and 6 mths ago that we graduated from hwachong, nothing much has
changed since then - we still have the good old class outings when we spend most
of the time walking around (+ extended one in europe recently), we still play
mahjong, watch movies, go 我的妈! together (at nwxiang's request of course)..

to many more years of friendship!

Some more SCREENING

I welcome you to embark on an emotional journey via WV's specially selected movies. They are sure to tickle your funny bone, draw your reserved tears, touch your compassionate soul, provoke your righteous... whatever.

Well, I've been advocating mindless, violent, horny shows (ok, just mindless, horny shows) and I want to have a change.

Here are some movies that will fascinate and amaze you, leave you emotionally exhausted, enrich or even enlighten you, and most of all, make you fucking depressed (pardon my french).. okae, there are some which are quite heart-warming, though I've always thought of them as being too glossy, sacharrin-coated and fake...

I'm planning to screen on Thursday evening? 4-5 liddat, can haf dinner at my house...

So here are the choices:

Bree, a born-again Christian and a pre-operative, male-to-female transsexual, holds down two jobs and saves every penny so that she can pay for one last operation that will make her a woman at last. One day, however, she receives a strange phone call. It appears that on the other side is Toby, apparently her son, who must be the product of a somewhat clumsy sexual encounter years ago when she was a man. He stays in New York, incarcerated. Bree flies from Los Angeles to New York in order to get the boy out of jail. At first she is reluctant to do so, but her therapist convinces her to face up to her past. The boy is handed over to her without a word of explanation and Toby believes the woman to be some Christian missionary determined to convert reprobates to Jesus; Bree sees no reason to clear up the misunderstanding. However, she finds out that the boy just wants to escape from her and hitchhike to Los Angeles. She persuades him to accompany her back to the west coast--secretly planning to leave him at his stepfather's along the way. Toby is happy to take her up on her offer.
****Personnally recommend this, looks very interesting, and got good reviews from average movie-goers like you and me, ie. not critics

(Ok, the poster can be quite misleading, but well, I guess sometimes real life can be quite sleazy too)
An ensemble cast telling 10 stories with intertwining characters. One story is about a father and son who are dating the same woman . Another features a woman who long ago gave her baby up for adoption but is now being blackmailed by a documentary filmmaker who claims to know the now-grown child's whereabouts.
****I personally don't really wanna watch this, cause according to reviews the dialogue can be quite confusing, and I still can't find the subtitles to accompany it.. and I think this is one of those films which will leave you more cynical, saddened and depressed about real life...

Antonio Salieri believes that Mozart's music is divine. He wishes he was himself as good a musician as Mozart so that he can praise the Lord through composing. But he can't understand why God favored Mozart, such a vulgar creature, to be his instrument. Salieri's envy has made him an enemy of God whose greatness was evident in Mozart. He is set to take revenge.
****I think it's a semi-musical. I just realized dis shit got 7 oscars!!! WTF!!

The UK is about to switch its currency from Pounds to Euros, giving a gang a chance to rob the poorly-secured train loaded with money on its way to incineration. But, during the robbery, one of the big bags falls literally from the sky on Damian's playhouse, a 5-year old given to talking to saints. The boy then starts seeing what the world and the people around him are made of. A very rare film in which ethics, being human and the soul all come to the forefront on this masterly-written, directed and acted, very fun, film. Don't miss this opportunity to your train to heaven!
****Very very nice story! Though I feel that it's quite glossed over, I personally don't recommend dis one osso, cuz i watched be4.. haha.

Or maybe you just don't want to explore your sensitive side...
This one is one of the better action movies though, won some sundance film festival awards...

merry xmas, peepz!

yo sorry for being so inactive for the past month - mold's starting to grow on my cerebrum/cerebellum/wadeva, and thinking of anything remotely academic is starting to get painful.. good thing my hols (and bun's) last till jan 15 *yawn*

the long hols is partly cos christmas and new year is a BIG DEAL to the angmors.. to me, it's just like any other day (it'll be different only if i get a christmas present - any volunteers? =D), but to them, it's like chinese new year eve to us - ALL shops close early (almost got chased out of a shop at 4pm), angmors rush back to their families and relatives, and then celebrate christmas together.. i'm not too sure what they do in their homes anyway, that one xiz wld be in a better position to describe cos she experienced (or is experiencing) a christmas in a real angmor family.. i'd probably be rotting in front of my heater and singing christmas carols for my four walls to echo back =)

anyways, esp to the christians in our class, merry xmas!

Hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour."

Oh yea, I just love that =) I've also been developing an appreciation for german music recently. I cant believe 933 is actually helping in that too. My favourite song goes by the chinese name of 小赖皮之歌 =D.....

.... Schni schna schnappi, Schnappi Schnappi Schnapp!

How often do 4 yr olds get a #1 hit on the german charts anyway, simply phenomenal XD

Some Reflections

After receiving medical education for half a year, i had a chance to be on the other end of that education. For a month now, yes it has been one bloody month now, i have been having gastric pains on and off throughout the day. It is one of the most horrendous experience ever, and very often amidst the throes of pain i would wonder, with whatever consciousness left to me, if this is how you girls feel every month. Really take my hat off to you people. I would opt to remain a guy in my next life.

Went to the doctor's, hmm to be precise, went to the doctors' a grand total of five times before i was referred to the hospital. Saw four doctors altogether, with each successive one strenthening the drug used after realising the impotency of their predecessor's prescription. And so i realise with certain sadness this is how doctors have to function. They cant possibly give you the strongest drugs on the shelf... thats like an overkill. So the strength and dosage are increased steadily, and it's literally painfully slowly. As such i had to tahan the pain for two weeks before they decided they cant do a thing. But isn't this somehow...wrong? Does it mean patients like me have to wait and suffer the illness for a certain amount of time before we can get the correct people's attention? And because of the system in the polyclinics, i didn't get to see the same doctors. Is this an intrinsic flaw in our healthcare system?

The pain is a diffuse, bloating sort of pain. The most intense is at night, when it's like a night call. For the first week it woke me up everyday at ungodly hours, between 2 to 5 am. So basically i couldn't eat, couldn't sleep, couldn't study. With the impending CAs you can imagine how painfully frustrating it was. My meals consisted of half a bowl of porridge with a few slices of carrot and lotus seed. But the worse thing was... I couldn't do ANYTHING to help myself. The doctors i was seeing didn't help to. In the middle of the night when everybody was asleep, when the pain was at its zenith, i felt hopeless. Hopelessly helpless. I started to doubt if i would ever feel well ever again. Ok nono this is not a self pitying post. What really struck me then was the sudden realisation that people who are sick all over the world feel this way. People who have cancer especially, or AIDS, or any other blasted thing you can think of. In the past i use to read in the papers how Mr X, after a fierce battle with cancer, managed to overcome it, or how a five year old was diagnosed with leukemia etc etc. I know i still wont be able to understand the full extent of their torments, but this experience is really one step in helping comprehend the feeling of helplessness and hopelessness that these pple feel.

An ultrasound was done on me to see if i had any gall bladder stone. It looked fine. Next was an endoscopy. heh that was quite an experience. I was supposedly given anesthesia which for some reason gave me nothing but a feeling of giddyness... AFTER the operation. Swallowing that tube was...ugh... try stuffing a hose into your git. You can choke on your saliva. Whenever i tried to swallow i end up retching. And how does it feel to be retching lying on your side with a disgusting hose stuffed down your gullet? Go figure.
The morphine applied to my throat tasted like rotten banana. I didn’t know what to do with the fluid and i couldn’t ask cos my mouth was already yanked wide open by then. So i swallowed it. Yucks. When i went home my throat was still hurting from all the friction, despite the morphine.

I was diagnosed with pangastritis. No xiz, not pang-gastritis. Pangastritis. Inflammation of the whole stomach. And when you get it it’s still pangastritis. Not keungastritis. So there.

more about dancing

yep! dancing is a complicated field of science indeed! its all about physics and anatomy if you look closely enough. when i was 6, i felt super smart cos nobody outside my ballet class knew what the "cock-six" was, let alone where it was. (though now i know better, and also that the correct spelling for that is coccyx (: heez ) and trying to co-ordinate the upper limbs with the lower limbs, the pelvis and abdomen with the head, at the same time trying to keep in time with the music and contracting the correct muscles in order to look relaxed... at the end of the exercise, we'd have been concentrating so hard that our teacher had to tell us to remember to breathe!
anyway, you may think this is anatomically impossible, but there is an exercise in ballet where you're supposed to circumflex, albeit a very small circumference, your knee joint! yes! the hinge joint between your femur and your tibia! its called ronds de jambe en lair, fyi ningky. oh... and there is this other step where your leg in the flexed position can become extended without passing through the vertical position. yep... so now our dearests POHCs can go check up on the other joints and muscles involved in these beautiful illusions.

but science aside, what really makes a dancer is the feelings he or she brings into the dance itself. you can get all the steps right, do a 180 degree cantata or a dip so low your partner's head is touching her heels, but without gan(3) jue(4) its gonna be the most, awfully boring dance performed. margot fonteyn didn't have the best turn-out among her contemporaries, but her name is legendary all the same.

yep. so, quanyao, jia you! and to everybody else, get up and boogey! :)

about ballroom dancing

haha had my first lesson today...and here are my thoughts

ballroom dancing is like basketball...no joke...your 脚步 is very important..and when your 脚动, your 手也要动. when your 手动 your 头 also 要动...however must also relax..cannot be too 硬..must be 灵活 n 随机应变...your must have situational awareness n know where the other participants are or you may be nudged out of the picture...you must also assist your teammates...and it's fun too la..

ballroom dancing is like an extremely complicated field of science...haha...although there are fixed rules and principles that can be followed...there are always exceptions...and there are so many variables to consider...where to step..where to place ur arms..where to swing ur shoulders and hips..then u have to consider abt ur partner too...have to give way to them..and for guys you must be leading..

hehehe..toe and knees is hurting a little from all the weight-shifting..

enjoy your hols pple!

Taken from a medical student's blog

Diet, Exercise, and Calories

We’re big fans of the KISS method (Keep It Simple, Stupid) of health, and thus I now present to you the tried and true dieting secret:

3500 Calories equals 1 pound.

I kid you not. Many patients are surprised when I reveal this number to them–amazed that it even exists–and it’s probably the basis for The Weight Watchers Points system and most other similar products. The idea is simple, but just for repetition: 3500 Calories equals 1 pound. That means that for every 3500 calories you expend, you lose a pound, and for every 3500 Calories you take in, you gain one. (This is not a perfect correlation, but it’s pretty accurate.) Want to lose a pound a week? Eat 500 less calories a day. Or eat 250 less and exercise 250 more. I found a nice simple chart that gives some rough estimates of various exercises one can do and their Calorie expenditure per 10 minutes.

So how many Calories do you “need” each day? 2,000-2,500, depending how active you are. For a better estimate, try the male or female Calorie calculator.

And remember, you didn’t gain weight overnight. It was a gradual process–over months to years–so it’s not fair (although we’d all prefer it) for the weight to come off in a couple weeks. Slow and steady wins the race. 4 pounds a month is almost 50 pounds a year. And don’t forget to reward yourself; losing weight is a difficult process. Your body will fight you as much as it can; it’s still stuck in the evolutionary adaptation of trying to hold on to as many nutrients as possible.

Portion control is one of the easiest ways to lose weight; you just have to eat less. (Exercise has many of its own benefits as well, aside from helping you lose weight.) If you normally eat until you’re stuffed, try this: eat until you’re not hungry. They’re very different entities.
