hehe...

Two poems from Gelert Burgess

Purple Cow, 1895
I never saw a purple cow
But if I were to see one
Would the probability ravens are black
Have a better chance to be one?
Confession: and a Portrait Too, Upon a Background that I Rue

Ah yes, I wrote The Purple Cow,
I'm sorry now I wrote it;
But I can tell you, anyhow,
I'll kill you if you quote it!
---

The first poem stretches logic. The second is open to comments.

WHY is it that some pple have so much time...

these mails never fails to exercise my rectus abdominis and facial muscles...i mean... NNPC? wth...

FROM THE DESK OF:DR ROBERT WILLIAM
CHAIRMAN,CONTRACT AWARD COMMITTEE,N.N.P.C.
NNPC TOWERS,CENTRAL DISTRICT,LAGOS-NIGERIA.
Dear Sir/Ma
REQUEST FOR URGENT MUTUAL BUSINESS TRANSACTION.
Although this proposal might come to you as a surprise since it is
coming from someone you don't know or ever seen before, butafter due
deliberation with my colleagues, we have decided to forward this
business proposal to you. We want a reliable person who would assist
us to transfer the sum of USD$30Million (Thirty million United States
Dollars)into his or her nominated bankAccount. This fund resulted
from an over-invoiced bill from contract awarded by us under the
budget allocation to my organization{NNPC}of Turn Around Maintainace
and the bill was approved for payment by the appropriate authorities.
The contract was executed, commissioned and the contractor was duly
paid his full cost of the contract as stipulated in the contract
agreement leaving behind the USD$30M.
...........................................................
Therefore, the over-invoiced Amount of USD$30M which we have
deliberately over estimated for our own use is what we need your
assistance for transfer and for our mutual benefits. Due to the civil
services code of conduct here in Nigeria, civil servants are not
allowed to operate or own foreign account.
This is why we are contacting you for assistance in this regard. We
have agreed to share the money as fo{1llows. }. 15% for your
assistance/account {2.} 80% for US,{3.} 5% for tax/expenses, as may
be required by your Government and ours. As you may want to know and
make you less curious, I got your address from a reputable Large
chamber of commerce and industry and I am the executive chairman of
the contract Award committee of the Nigerian National Petroleum
Corporation (NNPC). This transaction is very much free from all sort
of risk hence this business was carefully planned before it was
successfully executed and we the NNPC officials involved in the deal
have put in many years of meritorious service to our organization.
...........................................................
We have been exercising patience for this opportunity for so long and
for most of us this is a life time opportunity we cannot afford to
miss. To get this fund into your account, we have to present an
international business outfit and consequent upon indication of your
interest to fully assist us in this transaction, you are required to
furnish us with the followings{A)Your Banker's name and address,
telephone, fax and telex numbers.{B) Beneficiary of the account ,
Account Number and Routing code if any. {C) Your Private
Telephone/Fax Numbers for easy communication. This information will
enable us apply for approval of the fund from the concerned quarters
within three to four banking days and the Nigerian National Petroleum
Corporation (NNPC) payment information data will be faxed immediately
to you for completion.
...........................................................
Myself and our lawyer involved in this deal will come to your country
to arrange for our share upon confirmation from you that the money
has been credited into your nominated bank account. All these will
only take us about fourteen working days to transfer this fund into
your account from the day we receive the requirements. Your line of
business in this transaction does not matter. Honesty and your
ability to keep it secret and keep our own safe when the money hits
your account is what matters.
Your prompt reply will be highly appreciated.
Please reply to my alternative Email robert_konzult@katamail.com
Best regards,
DR ROBERT WILLIAM
Chairman Contract Award Committee,
Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation{N.N.P.C}.

Another week in the rain

Oh yes, most days this week of October have seen rain falling around Singapore like countless strings of beads pattering away on the earth. Refreshing and yet somewhat melancholic, listening to the rhythmn of the falling rain (nice song!)

Playhouse (plays put up by the different levels of medicine) is on tmr heh. Gd luck to our backstage crew with your discussions about the cardiac anastamosis :p

Recently, quite a few pple have been going on about widgets. I think I have more of a 三分鐘熱度 over these applications but nonetheless, go see if you can find a widget that works for you at http://www.widgetgallery.com/ ("p)

Been blog surfing and apparently there's been a bit of hoo-ha over the decision to publish the full genome of the 1918 influenza virus for the whole world to see. Intended to help come up with a suitable vaccine for the current bird flu (which has reached the shores of the continent some of our friends are on too), some have likened it to releasing precise designs for an atomic bomb. Nothing new, but its kind of depressing/irritating how every new development has to bring along this sort of implications. And as such possibilities continue to increase with time, one wonders when the escalating probability of something going horribly wrong will produce a positive result. Forunately/unfortunately, most of us will do nothing more than wonder.

Was reading a few articles, and apparently, a late wake time causes a significantly greater phase delay in the circadian rhythm than does a late bedtime. And there's even a syndrome called the restless leg syndrome hahz. For more, go to this website called www.medscape.com Yea, registration for an account is free. Not bad :)

Hais, waiting for the next big interesting project to come along, and no its not studying for CAs :S Do blog more about your lives heh. Weekly post! Speaking of interesting, I shall end of revealing the significance of the picture up there. I think some of you probably know it liao :P

Its not some queer-looking necklace but an orchidometer: a device frequently used by endocrinologists to measure the size of the testes. Since testicular growth is typically the first physical sign of true puberty, one of the most common uses is as confirmation that puberty is beginning in a boy with delay. Large testes (macroorchidism) can be a clue to one of the most common causes of mental retardation, fragile X syndrome. Apparently the sizes range from 1cm3 to 25cm3. 1-3cm3 are the pre-puberty sizes and 4 onwards after puberty. Doctors sometimes informally refer to them as "Prader's balls", the "endocrine rosary." or my favourite "the medical worry beads". :)

a few "tips" on "cooking"

it's not easy mustering the courage to practice the art of making edible stuff, especially when the stuff turns out less than edible =) i cooked a few times w bun, and i think we need more training in this department =D

anw, some "tips":
1. never offer to add onions to anything - i'm still wondering why a lot of pple here hate eating onions..
2. soy sauce is king - nearly everything goes w soy sauce
3. never add salt liberally to sth w soy sauce already added - it's one of the only ways to spoil a dish containing eggs (see pt 4)
4. it is almost impossible to ruin a dish containing egg as the main ingredient.. trust me, even after all the possible cooking disasters i have done w it, it still tastes pretty good in e end =)
5. too many cooks spoil e broth - i thought i had added too much soy sauce on e chicken, but bun comes along and adds more to it..
6. try not to squeeze in a small kitchen w bun in it =)

bun, if u're reading this, pls dun take offence hor.. it's nice having u witnessing the disasters produced in the kitchen(s) w me =p

The world as I see it

An essay by Albert Einstein

"How strange is the lot of us mortals! Each of us is here for a brief sojourn; for what purpose he knows not, though he sometimes thinks he senses it. But without deeper reflection one knows from daily life that one exists for other people -- first of all for those upon whose smiles and well-being our own happiness is wholly dependent, and then for the many, unknown to us, to whose destinies we are bound by the ties of sympathy. A hundred times every day I remind myself that my inner and outer life are based on the labors of other men, living and dead, and that I must exert myself in order to give in the same measure as I have received and am still receiving...

"I have never looked upon ease and happiness as ends in themselves -- this critical basis I call the ideal of a pigsty. The ideals that have lighted my way, and time after time have given me new courage to face life cheerfully, have been Kindness, Beauty, and Truth. Without the sense of kinship with men of like mind, without the occupation with the objective world, the eternally unattainable in the field of art and scientific endeavors, life would have seemed empty to me. The trite objects of human efforts -- possessions, outward success, luxury -- have always seemed to me contemptible.

"My political ideal is democracy. Let every man be respected as an individual and no man idolized. It is an irony of fate that I myself have been the recipient of excessive admiration and reverence from my fellow-beings, through no fault, and no merit, of my own. The cause of this may well be the desire, unattainable for many, to understand the few ideas to which I have with my feeble powers attained through ceaseless struggle. I am quite aware that for any organization to reach its goals, one man must do the thinking and directing and generally bear the responsibility. But the led must not be coerced, they must be able to choose their leader. In my opinion, an autocratic system of coercion soon degenerates; force attracts men of low morality... The really valuable thing in the pageant of human life seems to me not the political state, but the creative, sentient individual, the personality; it alone creates the noble and the sublime, while the herd as such remains dull in thought and dull in feeling.

"This topic brings me to that worst outcrop of herd life, the military system, which I abhor... This plague-spot of civilization ought to be abolished with all possible speed. Heroism on command, senseless violence, and all the loathsome nonsense that goes by the name of patriotism -- how passionately I hate them!

"The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion that stands at the cradle of true art and true science. Whoever does not know it and can no longer wonder, no longer marvel, is as good as dead, and his eyes are dimmed. It was the experience of mystery -- even if mixed with fear -- that engendered religion. A knowledge of the existence of something we cannot penetrate, our perceptions of the profoundest reason and the most radiant beauty, which only in their most primitive forms are accessible to our minds: it is this knowledge and this emotion that constitute true religiosity. In this sense, and only this sense, I am a deeply religious man... I am satisfied with the mystery of life's eternity and with a knowledge, a sense, of the marvelous structure of existence -- as well as the humble attempt to understand even a tiny portion of the Reason that manifests itself in nature."

The world another sees it:

A fallen leaf, a fading scent.
A whithered rose, a heart's content.
The world we know, will come to pass.
All that we hold, might never last.

But in this world, there still live some,
who wait for days, that may not come.
For what they dream, might come to be,
what they believe, you soon may see.

Do you tread the road less taken?
Chase things others left forsaken?
Thoughts can deceive, only time will see,
how your choices shape destiny.

an amazing encounter

haha..today i was stripped and made to lie on the bed..:):) then i was touched and rubbed by at least 5 girls...they then applied some gel on me, esp around the nipples and chest and clipped metal wires onto my body...they refused to allow me to move and they did all the work...

sounds obsence? kinky? fun? well it is:) heehee

actually no la..cos today we had cardio physio tutorial and i was volunteered to do the ECG..cos like there were only 2 guys in our group and they needed a girl cos the patient had to be half-naked...

the other guy, alvin tan (some pple shld know him?), very smartly volunteered for another very simple experiment...and i bobian have to strip myself and lie on the bed...the prof in charge being very fun, then asked them to clean my body with alcohol wipes...they then applied this sticky strips of paper with conducting gel on my chest la...they then clipped on the conducting electrodes and measured my ECG lo...:):):):)

so it's not what u think...;)

comparison of colleges - bun vs me

since a certain someone has been clamouring for news abroad, lemme just post sth abt bun's and my college =) for the uninitiated, i'm in magdalene (pronounced mawd-lyn) while bun's in st johns (usually called johns, not to be confused with long johns =D )

so let's list the numerous factors...

$
johns: freaking rich.. how else can u explain the fact that they dun need to pay to use the washing machine?
magd: very very poor.. and washing a load of clothes cost 1.20 pounds >.<

size
johns: freaking big.. walking to bun's room takes abt 10 mins from e college gate.. it's e second largest college in cam
magd: small.. my room is 2 mins walk from my college gate

college gate
johns: 3 in all (i think), and the metal gates all have intricate designs, which are nice to look at
magd: 2 wooden doors.. some ppl may walk past my college without knowing that there's a college inside

history
johns: founded 1511
magd: founded 1428 by monks who try to distance themselves from the temptations of town.. explains why i dun go pubbing that often right =)

student population
johns: pretty large.. 800+
magd: small.. 500+

scenery
johns: contains numerous expanse of green grass.. too much land probably =)
magd: adjacent to river cam.. i can hear ducks squawking occassionally =D

room amenities
bun's: no fridge, pretty big room, power sockets do not have on-off switches (they're always on), shares toilet w a number of pple, has washbasin, carpeted
mine: has a fridge, pretty small room, shares toilet w only a neighbour, has washbasin, and my carpet is less thick than my towel is..

fyi: johns is the nearest college to magd, but not e other way round - trinity is just beside johns, and trinity happens to be the biggest college (i think) and the richest (definitely) of all colleges.. shall not go into discourse abt trinity.. it's enough to make any person envious of that place..

Singapore update

Hello everyone everywhere!
as ningky said, its indeed the beginning of another phase. Good to hear from everyone everywhere indeed to entertain us with your stories. Well, weekly post! Ok, last week isnt counted since we were seeing so many pple off... tired lah :S And of course kudos to all the pple who liang lei cha dao continuously for the past few days.

Speaking of that... a few of us where influenced by Ronnie to go and donate blood at NUH today heh. Now, for pple for me it was the first time so no wonder i find it something bloggable. So me and ronnie were so bored that we walked around NUH for 1 and a half hours looking at all the different clinics from IVF to Cancer centre. Fell alseep reading brochures on all sort of cancer :S Apparently among all the races in Singapore, Chinese have a higher predisposition to many cancers... hmm.

Anyway, yea... so weix and yang soon joined us at the blood donation centre, we filled in our form which included questions like "for male donors, have u had sex with any other male in the past 6 months?" Well... I suppose if you see people walking away after filling up the declaration halfway you can guess which questions were the culprit.

So after filling that up, we got our fingers pricked by a mini autoclick, got our blood pressures measured (the nurse had to measure mine 4times before getting a high enough value?) and proceeded on to venipuncture. So u think everything is alright after they inject anasthetics? no man, all wrong lor. The nurse saw the blood collected was only increasing 1ml/s so decided that the problem lay with the position of the needle. So she decided to twirl it around my median cubital vein like a small kid playing with his straw in a cup. Still not good enough? She decided to stick it further in... *cringe, ouch* Yea, she gave up and returned it to the orginal position. Well, actually, I just wasnt squishing the ball with my hand enough :)

I can imagine weixiang as one of those patients who get us newbie clinical students/housemen taking blood from them man:

nurse 1: -prepares to poke needle into weix-
nurse 2: Nono! not like that!!!
weix: ...
nurse 2: U shd poke here at this angle...
nurse 1: -seemingly enlightened-

*censored*

nurse 2: nurse 1, u need more practice ah...

Okay, that's enough crap... I guess the real aim of my weekly post should be to update the overseas pple about local news lest they have no time to look through the news as carefully as their A level papers :) We dont want our future civil servants to be out of touch with our concerns eh :p

So, today's news... nothing interesting actually unless you're interested in gettin a car. More of the same... allow me to quote PM lee at a foreign correspondents assoc talk:

After explaining that the IR guidelines were delayed to ensure terms actually do benefit both bidders and the nation, he went on to reiterate why the IRs had to have casinos by saying, "Its no longer possible to protect Singaporeans from themselves and, in fact, we shouldn't be indefinitely protecting Singaporeans from themselves. And, therefore, we have to have the IRs in Singapore." I see, I see :)

On the topic of the singapore government being homophobic. In 1998, Minister mentor was asked if gays had a place in Singapore. MM LKY replied that it was a question of what a society considered acceptable and Singaporeans were still largely very conservative. 5 yrs later, senior minister GCK said the government was openly employing homosexual pple even in sensitive jobs. Now, PM Lee says that while accepting gays, gay marraiges and parties are banned from this year because, "I think it will be offensive to a large number of Singaporeans and it will be very divisive."

Yep, and apparently in the competitiveness report released last week by the Geneva-based World Economic Forum, Singapore ranked 69th in the health and primary education segment due to our low primary school enrolment behind zimbabwe and kenya at 94%. Business impact of HIV/Aids and malaria based on respondents answers to questions on whether current or future impacts of these diseases are a problem ranked singapore 35th and 54th in those segments. Even though our low infant mortality rate was joint top with Iceland and Japan and our life expectancy was 10th best, we are still 69th overall....

And in terms of freedom of press, we're 98th out of 104th :p

everywhere

the sending off of xiz marks the end of another period. Now everybody is somewhere doing something. In fact, everybody is everywhere doing everything. We have guys in the army, ranging from climbing impossible peaks in Taiwan to chiong-sua-ing in milo every other day as elite infantry. We also have guys standing smartly at the presidential residence saying hi by banging rifle everyday to our beloved pres. Oh and not to forget the one or two combat paid aircon room workers serving the nation by... erm... well...selflessly spending their time to type and arrange... something.

And the rest of us lucky few got the opportunity to study again, in science, medicine, accountancy, pharmacy, dentistry. The even luckier few who got the chance to go overseas-- update! Not just on your own blog! Crap here also! It's great to hear about the harry potter-like halls in Cambridge, the funny people you meet and the girls who oogle back at you heh. Post pics (bun, if not nobody believe you hahaha)...

So use this space to bitch about sleeping in milo, complain about workload, tempt others with nice pictures....whatever it is, it's always great to hear from old friends :)

ps. shea!! weekly post!!!
