dirac
dirac stories
our current chemistry lecturer picked up the habit of the first lecturer we had - he had a "half-time break" roughly in the middle of the lecture so that we could take a break from the obscure thermodynamic equations he's trying to drum into our heads..
so for today, he said that "we should know more about our university", and proceeded to tell us stories about cambridge's past luminaries =D he told us stories abt 2 pple, but i can only remember the dirac stories cos it was so interesting =)
dirac has a rather eccentric nature - he is exceedingly reticent, and he is rather literal when it comes to interpreting meanings =)
story #1:
once, when he was having dinner with other fellows, the lady beside him was desperately trying to have a conversation with the chap sitting beside her. so, she asked casually, "is it windy today?" after hearing that, dirac stopped eating, left the hall, went outside, and came back remarking "no."
story #2:
once when he was in america, he was interviewed by a journalist.
journalist: professor dirac, is the field you're dealing with now difficult to understand? dirac: yes. j: could you explain it in such a way that even the general public could understand it? d: (long pause) no.
sensing that this interview was going nowhere, the journalist decided to ask about dirac's personal life.
j: professor dirac, do you go to the movies? d: yes. j: when was the last time you went for a movie? d: (long pause) in the '20s.
story #3:
once, he gave a lecture to students about physics. at the end of the lecture, one student raised up his hand.
student: professor, i couldn't understand the last equation you've just mentioned. (long pause in lecture theatre) chairman of the session: professor, aren't you going to answer the question? dirac: it wasn't a question; it's a statement.
dirac reminds me of someone in our class who shares a passion similar to dirac's =) his one-word replies are often conversation killers, i swear =P
by sheer coincidence, dirac received his phd from the college that bun is in now..
