Singapore update
Hello everyone everywhere! as ningky said, its indeed the beginning of another phase. Good to hear from everyone everywhere indeed to entertain us with your stories. Well, weekly post! Ok, last week isnt counted since we were seeing so many pple off... tired lah :S And of course kudos to all the pple who liang lei cha dao continuously for the past few days.
Speaking of that... a few of us where influenced by Ronnie to go and donate blood at NUH today heh. Now, for pple for me it was the first time so no wonder i find it something bloggable. So me and ronnie were so bored that we walked around NUH for 1 and a half hours looking at all the different clinics from IVF to Cancer centre. Fell alseep reading brochures on all sort of cancer :S Apparently among all the races in Singapore, Chinese have a higher predisposition to many cancers... hmm.
Anyway, yea... so weix and yang soon joined us at the blood donation centre, we filled in our form which included questions like "for male donors, have u had sex with any other male in the past 6 months?" Well... I suppose if you see people walking away after filling up the declaration halfway you can guess which questions were the culprit.
So after filling that up, we got our fingers pricked by a mini autoclick, got our blood pressures measured (the nurse had to measure mine 4times before getting a high enough value?) and proceeded on to venipuncture. So u think everything is alright after they inject anasthetics? no man, all wrong lor. The nurse saw the blood collected was only increasing 1ml/s so decided that the problem lay with the position of the needle. So she decided to twirl it around my median cubital vein like a small kid playing with his straw in a cup. Still not good enough? She decided to stick it further in... *cringe, ouch* Yea, she gave up and returned it to the orginal position. Well, actually, I just wasnt squishing the ball with my hand enough :)
I can imagine weixiang as one of those patients who get us newbie clinical students/housemen taking blood from them man:
nurse 1: -prepares to poke needle into weix- nurse 2: Nono! not like that!!! weix: ... nurse 2: U shd poke here at this angle... nurse 1: -seemingly enlightened-
*censored*
nurse 2: nurse 1, u need more practice ah...
Okay, that's enough crap... I guess the real aim of my weekly post should be to update the overseas pple about local news lest they have no time to look through the news as carefully as their A level papers :) We dont want our future civil servants to be out of touch with our concerns eh :p
So, today's news... nothing interesting actually unless you're interested in gettin a car. More of the same... allow me to quote PM lee at a foreign correspondents assoc talk:
After explaining that the IR guidelines were delayed to ensure terms actually do benefit both bidders and the nation, he went on to reiterate why the IRs had to have casinos by saying, "Its no longer possible to protect Singaporeans from themselves and, in fact, we shouldn't be indefinitely protecting Singaporeans from themselves. And, therefore, we have to have the IRs in Singapore." I see, I see :)
On the topic of the singapore government being homophobic. In 1998, Minister mentor was asked if gays had a place in Singapore. MM LKY replied that it was a question of what a society considered acceptable and Singaporeans were still largely very conservative. 5 yrs later, senior minister GCK said the government was openly employing homosexual pple even in sensitive jobs. Now, PM Lee says that while accepting gays, gay marraiges and parties are banned from this year because, "I think it will be offensive to a large number of Singaporeans and it will be very divisive."
Yep, and apparently in the competitiveness report released last week by the Geneva-based World Economic Forum, Singapore ranked 69th in the health and primary education segment due to our low primary school enrolment behind zimbabwe and kenya at 94%. Business impact of HIV/Aids and malaria based on respondents answers to questions on whether current or future impacts of these diseases are a problem ranked singapore 35th and 54th in those segments. Even though our low infant mortality rate was joint top with Iceland and Japan and our life expectancy was 10th best, we are still 69th overall....
And in terms of freedom of press, we're 98th out of 104th :p
