Another week in the rain
Oh yes, most days this week of October have seen rain falling around Singapore like countless strings of beads pattering away on the earth. Refreshing and yet somewhat melancholic, listening to the rhythmn of the falling rain (nice song!)
Playhouse (plays put up by the different levels of medicine) is on tmr heh. Gd luck to our backstage crew with your discussions about the cardiac anastamosis :p
Recently, quite a few pple have been going on about widgets. I think I have more of a 三分鐘熱度 over these applications but nonetheless, go see if you can find a widget that works for you at http://www.widgetgallery.com/ ("p)
Been blog surfing and apparently there's been a bit of hoo-ha over the decision to publish the full genome of the 1918 influenza virus for the whole world to see. Intended to help come up with a suitable vaccine for the current bird flu (which has reached the shores of the continent some of our friends are on too), some have likened it to releasing precise designs for an atomic bomb. Nothing new, but its kind of depressing/irritating how every new development has to bring along this sort of implications. And as such possibilities continue to increase with time, one wonders when the escalating probability of something going horribly wrong will produce a positive result. Forunately/unfortunately, most of us will do nothing more than wonder.
Was reading a few articles, and apparently, a late wake time causes a significantly greater phase delay in the circadian rhythm than does a late bedtime. And there's even a syndrome called the restless leg syndrome hahz. For more, go to this website called www.medscape.com Yea, registration for an account is free. Not bad :)
Hais, waiting for the next big interesting project to come along, and no its not studying for CAs :S Do blog more about your lives heh. Weekly post! Speaking of interesting, I shall end of revealing the significance of the picture up there. I think some of you probably know it liao :P
Its not some queer-looking necklace but an orchidometer: a device frequently used by endocrinologists to measure the size of the testes. Since testicular growth is typically the first physical sign of true puberty, one of the most common uses is as confirmation that puberty is beginning in a boy with delay. Large testes (macroorchidism) can be a clue to one of the most common causes of mental retardation, fragile X syndrome. Apparently the sizes range from 1cm3 to 25cm3. 1-3cm3 are the pre-puberty sizes and 4 onwards after puberty. Doctors sometimes informally refer to them as "Prader's balls", the "endocrine rosary." or my favourite "the medical worry beads". :)
