yep. i've come across these verses before. they're probably the most famous verses in the book of ecclesiastes. (by the way, the last verse "The secret to peace with God is to discover, accept, and appreciate God's perfect timing," is not found in the original scriptures) well, just to supply abit of background information about this section of text, this book is believed to have been written by king solomon, son of david, predecessors of Jesus' lineage. the entire book has a generally pessimistic tone and the author laments about the meaningless things in life, "the chasing after the wind" ecc 6:9. basically, the book tells christians to enjoy their work and the fruits of their labour. in a sense, that means accepting what comes and goes in life, as ryan mentioned. it means accepting death as a part of life, hurting as a part of healing and sadness as a part of joy. in particular, this part of the book, ecc 3, highlights the point that history repeats itself and nothing is new, and there is no use thinking about what might have been. i guess that's what it means by being at peace with yourself, that is, being able to accept the circumstances you are in, and instead of getting upset thinking about the "might-haves", make the best out of what you have been given, since there is no way to amend what is past. as ecc 5:10 aptly puts it, "Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless."
anyway, some interesting facts about king solomon:
the bible says that God appeared to solomon in a dream and asked him what he wanted. solomon told Him that he wanted wisdom and knowledge to govern His people, the people of jerusalem. God was pleased that he had not asked for strength, wealth or other earthly splendor, so he granted solomon his wish, along with wealth and splendor. and along with that, 700 wives and 300 concubines. the how and why, i have absolutely no idea. anyway, if you're wondering why a man like solomon would question the meaning of life when he has literarily almost everything anyone could ever ask for, i'd be glad to explain, but its getting pretty late and i need to leave for school really really freakin early tmr morning. yeh. so anyway, just to leave you with something to ponder about, ecc 3 is often quoted in relation to the christian stand on issues such as euthanasia and killing in general. if you're really interested, you can check out http://www.biblequery.org/ecc.htm its somewhere behind. yep. that's all for now. see you in school!
